Why professional licenses deserve dedicated tracking
Renewal cycles are not uniform. A nursing license in California renews every two years. In Texas it's two years, but the window and fee schedule differ. A real estate license in Florida renews every two years and requires 14 hours of CE. A CPA license in New York requires 40 hours per year, tracked against a triennial period.
The compounding problem is CE. The renewal date and the CE completion deadline are often different deadlines that both require attention. Miss the CE window and you cannot renew on time, even if you submit before the deadline.
Governing boards rarely send more than one reminder — sometimes none. A lapsed license can mean a gap in your ability to practice, reinstatement fees, and in some states, re-examination. The administrative fallout from a missed renewal is always more expensive than the renewal itself.
A calendar appointment is not enough. You need an alert chain that starts early, repeats as the date closes in, and stays attached to the license documentation.

How to set it up
- Open the Groups tab and create a group called Professional Licenses.
- Add a reminder for each license. Name it clearly — RN License — California, Real Estate License — Florida, CDL — Medical Certificate.
- Open the reminder and tap Edit. Under Schedules, add a one-time event set to your renewal date. If your license renews on a fixed cycle (every 2 years), add a repeating yearly schedule instead so future cycles populate automatically.
- Add advance alert offsets. 90, 60, 30, 14, and 7 days before covers most situations. You can set up to 10 offsets per reminder, each between 0 and 90 days in advance.
- Attach your current license. Under Documents, attach the PDF or image from your governing board. It previews with iOS Quick Look — useful at a job site or audit.
- Add a note with your CE hour requirement, your governing board's renewal URL, and your license number. The note field is searchable.

Continuing education deadlines
If your license requires CE hours, add a separate reminder for the CE completion deadline. Set it earlier than the license renewal date — often 30 to 60 days earlier, depending on your board's processing time.
Give that reminder its own alert chain. As the deadline approaches and your hours are still accumulating, you want alerts at 60, 30, and 14 days out — not just at renewal time.
You can attach CE completion certificates to the reminder as they arrive, so your records are assembled before you sit down to renew.
Frequently asked questions
Can I track licenses in multiple states? Yes. Add one reminder per license. A nurse with compact-state licenses adds one reminder per state license — each has its own renewal date, alert chain, and attached document. Group them all under Professional Licenses so they appear together on the Dashboard.
Can I share my license tracking with my employer? Not directly. Everyday Cue stores data on your device. You can export your data as JSON via Settings › Data Management, but there is no shared workspace or employer portal. What you can do: attach license copies to each reminder and share the document file separately when asked.
What if my renewal date changes? Open the reminder, tap Edit, and update the schedule date. Everyday Cue adjusts all your advance alerts automatically based on the new date. No manual recalculation.
Does this work for certifications like CPR or ACLS? Yes. Everyday Cue has no concept of "license" versus "certification" — it tracks anything with a date and a deadline. Add a reminder for your CPR card the same way you would for a state license. Set it to repeat every two years. Add your alert offsets. Done.
