The CE deadline problem
CE requirements vary by profession, state, and specialty. Cycles run one to three years. Most professionals accumulate hours near the deadline. That's manageable — the real risk is losing track of when the window closes.
Two deadlines exist, and they are not the same date.
Completion deadline. The last day coursework can legally count toward this reporting period.
Submission deadline. The last day you must certify those hours to your board. Some boards require submission weeks or months after the CE window closes.
Miss the submission deadline and your license can be suspended — even if every hour is done. The board doesn't know until you tell them.
CE providers also need time to issue certificates. Finishing a course days before your submission deadline is risky. Alerts at 6 months, 90 days, and 30 days give you enough runway to complete the hours, get certificates issued, and submit before the window closes.
How to track CE deadlines in Everyday Cue
- Create a "Certifications" group. In the Groups tab, tap + and name it. Add one group per license type, or one group per state if you hold licenses across states.
- Add a reminder for the submission deadline. Name it specifically: "CE Submission — RN — Florida" or "CPE Reporting — CPA — New York." Names must be unique within a group, so specificity avoids collision.
- Set the submission date as a one-time event. In the Schedules section, add a one-time event on your submission deadline date.
- Add advance alert offsets. Add offsets at 90 days and 30 days before the deadline. For 180-day advance notice, add a second one-time event 180 days before the submission date. Everyday Cue supports up to 10 alert offsets per reminder.
- Add a second reminder for your personal completion target. Create "Complete CE Hours — RN — Florida" with a one-time event 60 days before submission. Note the required hour count and approved providers in the notes field.
- Attach certificates as they arrive. Attach CE certificates as PDFs or images directly to the reminder. They sync to your other Apple devices via iCloud if you use it.
Professions that track CE in Everyday Cue
Registered nurses (CEU requirements, typically 24 hours per 2-year cycle), real estate agents, CPAs (CPE requirements, often 40 hours per year), cosmetologists and estheticians, licensed clinical social workers, teachers, pharmacists, insurance agents, and financial advisors holding FINRA registrations (annual regulatory element, December 31 deadline every year). If your board requires a set number of hours reported by a fixed date, this workflow applies.
Frequently asked questions
How do I track the hours themselves — not just the deadline? Everyday Cue tracks deadlines, not credit counts. Use your CE provider's transcript portal to log hours. Record the required total and completed count in the reminder's notes field. Attach your final transcript as a PDF when it's ready.
What if my CE cycle differs across states? Create one reminder per license per state with specific names. Everyday Cue lets you stack as many reminders as needed. Names only need to be unique within a group, so the same naming pattern works across groups organized by state.
Can I attach CE completion certificates? Yes. Each reminder supports PDF, JPEG, PNG, and HEIC attachments, previewed via iOS Quick Look. Files live on your device and never go to Everyday Cue servers. iCloud sync moves them to your other Apple devices using your existing Apple ID.
What's the difference between a CE deadline and a license renewal date? They're related but separate. Your CE submission deadline is when you certify completed hours to the board. Your license renewal date is when you pay the renewal fee and submit the renewal application — often after CE is certified. In many states, CE certification is a prerequisite for renewal. Set a reminder for each date.
