Time zones, explained
Anchored vs. floating times, and what happens to your reminders when you travel.
Most people never think about this — and that's the point. But if you cross time zones, it helps to know the two ways a reminder can treat its time.
Anchored time (the default)
By default, a new reminder is anchored to the time zone where you create it. It fires at the same wall-clock moment in that zone no matter where your device is. Set it for 9:00 AM Eastern and it stays 9:00 AM Eastern — travel all you like, and the anchor holds even while the app sits closed.
This is what you want when the place matters, not your location: a payment that posts at 9:00 AM Eastern, or a call that's fixed to a colleague's zone. A bill due 9:00 AM Eastern stays 9:00 AM Eastern on every device you own.
Floating time (opt-in)
Switch a reminder to floating and it follows your device's current time zone instead. Set it for 9:00 AM and it fires at 9:00 AM wherever you are — fly from New York to London and your morning reminder still lands at 9:00 AM local.
This is handy for everyday routines that should track wherever you wake up: take medication at 8 AM, stretch at noon. The clock time stays put; the zone moves with you.
Choosing per reminder
In a reminder's Edit view, the Time Zone selector under Notifications lets you pick:
- A specific zone — anchored (the default; pre-filled with the zone where you create the reminder).
- Follow device time zone — floating.
Tip: the default anchored zone is the safe choice for a deadline tied to a particular place — it keeps firing at that place's clock wherever you travel. Switch to floating for everyday routines that should follow you across zones.
Frequently asked questions
If I change my device's time zone in Settings, will floating reminders adjust automatically? Yes. Floating reminders read the device clock at the moment they fire, so they follow whatever zone iOS is set to at that time. No edits required.
I anchored a reminder to Eastern Time. Now I'm in California. When does it fire? At the Eastern equivalent of the time you set. If the reminder is set for 9:00 AM Eastern, it fires at 6:00 AM Pacific while you're on the West Coast. The reminder keeps its home-zone clock.
Can I anchor different reminders to different time zones? Yes. The time zone setting is per reminder, not per account. One reminder can be anchored to London, another to Tokyo, and a third set to floating — all on the same device.
What happens to an anchored reminder during Daylight Saving Time transitions? The anchor uses the IANA time zone identifier, which includes DST rules. When DST shifts in the reminder's zone, the alert adjusts automatically so the wall-clock hour in that zone stays correct.
