Why registration lapses happen

Your registration has a fixed expiration date. It arrives once a year. That should be easy to track — and yet lapse rates remain high.

Two things go wrong. First, paper renewal notices from the DMV get buried in mail, opened late, or thrown away before the date registers. Second, most people treat registration as a background task — the kind of thing that gets handled "eventually." Eventually sometimes arrives after the plate has expired.

The cost of forgetting is disproportionate. The registration fee itself is typically $20 to $150 depending on your state and vehicle type. A traffic stop for expired registration can mean a fix-it ticket, a fine of $100 to $500, or in states that treat it as a misdemeanor, a court appearance. In some jurisdictions, an officer can have the vehicle towed. A $50 renewal becomes a $300 problem, plus the hassle of getting your car back.

Driving with expired registration also affects your insurance position in some states. It is not a legal technicality worth gambling on.

How to track vehicle registration in Everyday Cue

Create a "Vehicles" group. In the Groups tab, tap + and name the group "Vehicles." It keeps all your vehicle-related reminders in one place.
Add a reminder per vehicle. Use a name like "Registration — 2019 Honda Civic" or "Registration — F-150." Names are unique within a group and can include emoji.
Set a recurring annual schedule. Enter your registration's expiration date as the anchor. Choose a yearly recurrence. Everyday Cue will fire alerts at that same point every year without any further input from you.
Add advance alerts. Set offsets at 60, 30, and 7 days before expiration. You can add up to 10 offsets, each between 0 and 90 days in advance. Adjust the windows to match how far in advance your state allows online renewal.

Track multiple vehicles

Add one reminder per vehicle in the same "Vehicles" group. Car, motorcycle, boat, trailer, RV — each has its own expiration date and its own alerts. The Dashboard shows days remaining for each one, so nothing goes unnoticed.

If you manage vehicles for a small business or family, the same approach works. Name reminders clearly — "Registration — Sprinter Van" and "Registration — Trailer #2" — and the group stays organized without extra effort.

What else to track in the Vehicles group

Registration is one date among several. The same group can hold reminders for emissions or smog test due dates, annual safety inspections (required in some states), oil change intervals, and tire rotation schedules. Set each on its own interval. Everything related to your vehicles stays in one place rather than scattered across calendar apps, notes, and memory.

Frequently asked questions

My registration is tied to my birthday. How do I set that? Enter your actual expiration date as the schedule anchor — the exact date printed on your sticker or registration document. Everyday Cue schedules relative to that date, not the calendar year. If your registration expires on your birthday each year, it will recur correctly once you set the first anchor date.

What about states with biennial (two-year) registration? A handful of states offer or require two-year registration cycles. When you add the schedule, set the recurrence interval to "every 2 years" rather than annually. The alert offsets work the same way. Check your renewal notice or your state's DMV website if you are unsure which cycle applies to your vehicle class.

Does this work for commercial vehicles or a small fleet? Yes. Add one reminder per vehicle regardless of type or registration class. Commercial vehicle registration windows sometimes differ from passenger vehicles, but Everyday Cue does not place restrictions on the schedule type or recurrence. Name reminders clearly — include the plate number or VIN suffix if that helps — and keep them in a shared group.

Can I access my registration document during a traffic stop? Yes. The attached document opens via iOS Quick Look directly from the reminder. No internet connection required — the file is stored on-device. Open Everyday Cue, navigate to the reminder, and tap the attachment.
