Why time-based car maintenance still matters
Modern cars ask to be serviced on two clocks: mileage and time, whichever comes first. If you drive less than average, the time clock is usually the one that catches you — and it's the one people forget, because nothing on the dashboard lights up for it.
Oil breaks down whether or not you hit the mileage. Wiper blades crack in the sun. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over the years. And the pure-calendar deadlines — your state safety or emissions inspection, and your registration — don't care how far you've driven at all. Miss those and you're looking at a citation, a failed inspection, or a car you can't legally drive, none of which cost less than the maintenance would have.
Date-based, not odometer-based — and why that's fine
Everyday Cue tracks dates and intervals, not mileage. It doesn't read your odometer or connect to your car. That sounds like a limitation, but the "whichever comes first" half that people actually miss is the time half — and time is exactly what a calendar-based reminder is built for.
Set each service to the interval your owner's manual recommends in months (most list both, e.g. every 6 months or 5,000 miles). If you're a heavy driver who hits the mileage sooner, shorten the interval to match your real pace. Either way, you get an advance alert with enough lead time to book the appointment.
How to set it up
- Open the Groups tab and create a group called Car (or one group per vehicle if you have several).
- Add a reminder for each service — Oil change, Tire rotation, State inspection, Registration, Insurance renewal.
- Open a reminder and tap Edit. Under Schedules, add a repeating interval — every 6 months for oil and tire rotation, every year for inspection and registration. For a one-off like your next inspection date, add a one-time event instead.
- Add advance alert offsets — 14 and 3 days before gives you time to call the shop and still have a backup day. You can set up to 10 offsets per reminder, each 0–90 days ahead.
- Under Documents, attach the last service record, your registration, or a photo of the windshield oil-change sticker. Everything opens with iOS Quick Look, on-device, even without a signal — useful at the shop or a traffic stop.
- Add a note with the oil type, filter part number, tire size and pressure, or the shop's phone number. Notes are searchable.
